A few weeks back, I asked people about the NEC 4D and other 16"+ monitors for the Amiga. Here is a summary of the responses I received. NEC 4D ====== Date: Fri, 15 Mar 91 08:34:03 -0800 From: navas@cory.BERKELEY.EDU (David C. Navas) :Biggest problem I have is that 2.0 ends up leaving a lot of the space to the :right of the viewspace unusable :( : :Black border isn't a huge issue for me -- certainly there is none top to :bottom. left-to-right there might be, because I've had to center the 2.0 :problem, which menas, yes there is one, but I never notice it. : :No, it can't use 15.XX Khx. This means: 1280x200 modes won't work, you can't :use it with the Video Toaster, Ham-E, DCTV, etc. No 16" monitor I found would :scan down that far, however, so... : :No wild praise, the Nec 4D is what I *expect* from a monitor, I dunno what :else to say, really. I found a place at work that had one and hooked it up :before I bought one -- you might consider doing the same. : : -Dave Mitsubishi Diamonscan (16") =========================== Date: Mon Mar 18 19:32:10 1991 EST From: wfhami!bill@usenet.INS.CWRU.Edu (Bill Hogsett) (Bill Hogsett) :Dan I have a 16" Mitsuibishi Diamond Scan with my 3000. It works fine. :The picture fills the screen completely, or nearly enough, that I see no :black border. I have never tried it with the deinterlacer off. The :overscan seems to work fine. : :I didn't see any other monitors before buying this one, and I have a :feeling that others might have sharper colors. : :I am a satisfied, but not enthusiastic user. MISCELLANEOUS ============= Date: Wed, 13 Mar 91 00:31:02 -0500 From: griffin@frith.egr.msu.edu (Danny Griffin) :BTW, there is a review of 16" monitors in a recent [March? April? 1991] :Computer Sources or PC Magazine.... ############# Date: Fri, 15 Mar 91 14:07:03 EST From: peter@cbmvax.cbm.commodore.com (Peter Cherna) ::It seems that the larger monitors don't support the 15.xx kHz video ::modes, since they start scanning around 20-30 kHz. :Surely there must be some monitor. I'd be quite surprised to learn that :there wasn't. Again, if you don't want SuperHires, you can get a VGA-only :monitor this size. ::If I have a 16" monitor on my Amiga that can handle only 30 kHz and ::up, such as the Nec 4D, can I use a genlock with this setup? :The output of the genlock is NTSC (or PAL). Somebody could build a genlock :that had a digitizing scan-doubler (basically a flicker-fixer) on its :output. With that hypothetical device you could watch genlocked output on a :VGA monitor. : :So you want a big multiscanning monitor. If you have trouble finding one, :or affording the one you find, you might be best off with a good VGA monitor :combined with a simple 15KHz monitor (keep your old 1080/1084/whatever).
