*** REPLACE THIS PLANET WITH YOUR SPACE COLONY *** There has been considerable discussion on the net and in the L5 Society about what to do about chapter support. May I make a suggestion that will hopefully reduce headquarters workload, and provide meaningful support for the chapters as well? Rather than sending reabates to chapters for new members, I suggest granting a credit towards chapter materials. These materials would be such things as promotional flyers, slides, buttons, books, etc. For a new member, a credit of $10 would be allowed. For each renewing member indicating a chapter affiliation, a credit of $4 would be granted. At reasonable intervals, quarterly or every six months, headquarters would send all chapters a statement of credit balance along with an order form for the promotional materials. The chapter could then use some or all of its credit plus some additional money if needed or wanted, to order the flyers or whatever. This reduces the workload for headquarters, since they would only have to send occasional mailings to the chapters, rather than a check every time someone renews. It conserves their money as well, since no money would go out. It eliminates the possibility of 'paper' chapters formed solely to get rebates. If someone creates a one-person chapter, all that would get that person is flyers and posters to get more members with. Isn't that what we want? And if that person gets us ten new members, and can afford a slide or videotape with $100 in credit, isn't that okay too? Dani Eder / Advanced Space Transportation / Boeing Aerospace Company
