[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Accelerator vs. 3000

mplevine@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (Marshall P. Levine) (04/13/91)

I need more speed. I currently have an AMIGA 2000, GVP quantum 40 hardcard,
micron 2-meg memory card, 2088 bridge, PLUS systems 40 hardcard (on the IBM
bus), and two 3.5" floppies and one 5.25" floppy, all internal. I am a
computer science undergraduate, concentrating on computer graphics. I would
like to develop some 3D animation software for the amiga but want a faster
setup on which to do so.

I am considering either selling my 2000 for some form of 3000, or buying an
accelerator. The 50Mhz GVP 3001 upgrade looks very tempting. I would greatly
appreciate any advice that anyone out there can give me. The GVP setup comes
with 4 or 8 megs of 32-bit ram, I think. Since I already have 3 megs of 16 bit
ram, won't this go over the limit for my system, since I have the bridgeboard?
Also, can I get the 32-bit memory to be allocated first, even before the
motherboard's one meg? I can probably get an educational discount, which is a
big factor. I am interested in the pros and cons of accelerating the 2000 vs.
upgrading to a 3000. If you think I should accelerate, please be specific on
how to do so (GVP 3001 vs. CBM 2630, for example). Please respond via e-mail.
Many thanks.
