[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] RAM Expansion for Supra 4x4 Hard disk controller

roth@skyler.mavd.honeywell.com (04/03/91)

Sorry for the lack of a subject line but this is my first posting.

Does anybody have an internal RAM expansion in their Supra 4x4 controller?
The documentation I originally got with my controller said that such a beast
was available but when I called Supra I was told that they didn't make them
any more. Any additional information that I can get would be appreciated.

I'll just bet your refering to the A1000 version of the 4x4 huh?
Been there for about 1 year ya know. The answer is no, it does not
exist from what I've been able to dig up. They really are a bad
support group.

I suspect the reason they're no longer available is due to problems with the
daughter board.

About 3 or 4 years ago when those RAM cards were available, I bought one of
the first ones from a local dealer. That evening, both the dealer and I
independently installed the daughterboards in our Supra 4x4 and we both
independently discovered they would self-destruct. I mean *FRY*, as in copper
traces curling up, smoke billowing from the unit, and capacitors ending up
appearing like raisins.

After removing the RAM daughterboard, the 4x4 continued to function normally,
and still does to this day, with over 1GB HD and other stuff on the SCSI bus.

This also speaks highly for the A1000's power supply ... the original one is
still functioning just fine in my A1000 even though I have lotsa internal
stuff in the machine and three (3) SOTS expansion boxes on the side (two of
the ComSpec AX2000 RAM boxes and the Supra 4x4 box) [and, yes, this IS the same
machine that I mentioned previously remains up for 6 months at a time between
my semi-annual fan-cleaning-and-dust-bunny-removal sessions].

Considering the problems with the RAM daughterboard in the 4x4, I would suggest
you seek other RAM expansion alternatives.
