Has anyone heard anything about the Leasat that was launched (not repaired)
on the last shuttle flight? Last I heard, it reached orbit sucessfully, but
it had had some serious control problem, and might be lost. Then it dropped
out of the national news (not known for their incredibly consistent follow-ups).
Also, does anyone have any statistics about satellite failures? Does the latest
bunch of failures/near failures (TDRSS, Westar, Palapa, Leasat, Ariane) look
like a ramp on the historical failure rate, or is there just more press (HA!)
or perhaps the launch rate is higher of late? Whatever the case, I can sure
see why the space insurance folks are worried.
