[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] RTC on 501 fails after adding Obese to A500 Rev5, and other things

u855203@probitas.cs.utas.edu.au (Michael Harlow) (04/15/91)

Greetings.
I apologise in advance if this is a FAQ. However it does have some extra
twists.

Briefly : I installed an Obese Agnus into a Rev 5 Machine, and the A501
Realtime clock cannot be found. The machine also gurus permanently on the
first three finger salute, requiring powering down. It also no longer will
run KickStart/WB 2.0.7 using ZKick into GVP Expansion Memory.
Where have I gone wrong ?

The Details (For those still reading)
I use Zkick 2.01 to load KS 2.0.7 into a GVPII HD+4Mb autoconfig unit.
Then load WB 2.0.7 This all runs very nicely. I like my first taste of WB2.

Then I installed an 8372A.
1. Removed 8371. Installed 8372, bending pin 41 out of the way so that it
would start up as PAL (Australia).
2. Moved JP2 (between uP and ROM) from bottom/middle to top/middle.
3. Removed pin 32 of Gary out of socket to disable RAMEX line.
4. Re-assembled.

On power up, there is 1M of Chip.
The RTC is 'not found' !
When the machine Gurus, it goes down for the count, requiring a power down.

When I try to load Kick 2.0 with ZKick, it tries, but when it resets,
the screen goes black with brief flashes of green lines, then Gurus
forever.

What have I done ?

(BTW: If you think I should have got an Authorised Commodore Service Centre
to do it, this is why not. There is but one for our state. They wanted
$150 to fit it. If you wanted 1M of chip, that was an extra $30 ! (I cannot
think of any reason to fit an Obese and not have the 1M of Chip ?). I bought
the virgin Obese from some reliable contacts, for $65 )

Any comments about any of this will be gratefully accepted.

Michael.
