[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] New Modem, many new questions

maniac@magic.cs.unlv.edu (Eric J. Schwertfeger) (04/27/91)

My old modem recently died, so I bought a new ZOOM modem with MNP5,
V.42, and V.42bis. This is my first time with any modem that does error
correction or data compression, so I've got several questions.

First of all, does V.42bis actually slow down the transfer of pre-compressed
data? In an article on 9600 Baud Modems, I got the impression that MNP5 will, but
that V.42bis checks to see if it is expanding the data before sending it.
Also, is there any way to turn off data compression *AFTER* connecting?
I'm interested in this so that reading mail from a BBS flies, but then I don't
suffer when downloading (I do a lot of both).

What is the easiest way to get rid of the 10 second delay when connecting
with a standard (non-protocol) modem? some of the BBSs I log onto start sending
while the ZOOM is still trying to auto-negotiate.

Finally, what are good PD/Shareware term programs? I'm a registered Access!
user, but now that Keith isn't working on it anymore, I'm looking for something else.
I like JRComm, and would use it, except that it does something strange with the
windows. PowerSnap guru's when it tries to cut from any JRComm window, and one of
my own programs, ScrapBook, required special-case code so that it wouldn't crash.
As for BaudBandit, I never liked it's pre-commercial form. I will consider
inexpensive commercial programs, but I have to try it first.
