[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] HELP! Misc problems with A500, Hurricane, ALF and AMAXII

stefano@polluce.sublink.org (Stefano Gatti) (05/02/91)

I have a A500 with Hurricane 68020/881 accelerator board and
a ALF interface board with a 30MB CDC Hard Disk. HD interface is not
standard and not auto-configuring; I will briefly describe it later.

I'm having some problems with Amigados and with A-Max emulator using
both boards. I'm sorry I put all the questions togheter but my brain
is very messy in general and it gets worse when i cannot solve problems.

The questions are:
Is it possible to use my hd with A-MAXII?

What steps are necessary to inform AMAXII about the hd?

What kind of drives (*.amhd) shall I use for ALF?

Has anyone found a good way to use the Hurricane 32bit memory
as Macintosh system (and not ram disk) memory? A-max works fine with 68020!

Is there a way to change 32 bit expansion address (from 600000H)?

(only for alf users) The HD is very old and has a lot of bad blocks:
Alfinstall does the low level formatting but crashes (error 33 ?!)
when it tries to remap bad blocks. It seems that during remapping it
distroyes the first track .
To use the hd I have to format 10 cylinders in order
to have alfinstall termitate correctly and then I hack the partition table
and tell it there are 669 cyls.
After this when the hd is used with FFS Amigados tells me there are
read/write errors; diskdoctor is unable to fix but brings the
file system in an inconsistent state.
Of course a low level test not always finds all the bad blocks in the HD.
Is there a tool to mark bad blocks *specified* by the user?

HW/SW CONFIGURATION

The memory configuration of my A500 is 0.5 MB chip, internal expansion of
0.5 MB fast (mapped at C00000), and 1MB 32 bit fast not auto-configuring.
I installed some jumpers in the motherboard so that I can easily change to
 1MB chip.

ALF is a German external board interfacing a pc hd controller
and is able to connect a ST-506 (pc style) HD to the AMY. Hd
is not bootable but is regularly partitionable with or without FFS
and is accessed via the device "alf.device" provided with ALF. AlF
does not provide any SCSI interface nor additional ROMs. ALF SW version
is 1.6.

I thank in advance those who read this msg until this point and have
some ideas about some of the above items.

Please answer by E-mail since i don't read regularly the news.
