DAN.BENDIKSEN@f601.n105.z1.FIDONET.ORG (DAN BENDIKSEN) (05/03/91)
Some time ago, a friend of mine accidently plugged my serial port into my
parallel port. You can guess what happened when he turned the computer on...
Kapluie! It smoked one of my 8250s! I was still in the warrentee period of
my Amiga, and the local service center was kind enough to repair it.
However, after the second trip in on related problems, I could no longer get
the problems to occure at the shop.
My A2000 still has wierd problems. The HD controler (which works perfeclty
else where) will produce read/write errors on my HD if I am silly enough to
copy files larger than 1.5 meg in size from partition to partition. What it
appears to do is write the file to the HD, then begin reading the large
file, and about two seconds later, the OS will tell the controler to update
the HD that had been written to. When this happens, 9 times out of 10, it
will lock the controler (the light on the controler will go steady) and I
will get the read/write error. Normaly, if I reboot the system, it will
validate that partition, and be done, but sometimes it will have corrupted
data on the HD partition.
Sometimes, when JrComm (1.02) opens a capture file for append, and then
(later) appends to it, I'll get read/write errors. If I use TADPro, when I
try to use the save option to HD, I almost always get read/write errors.
I have tried one other controler (GVP series I), and got very bad results
from it. It destroyed a couple partitions (lucky I had backups), produced
read/write errors, and when I opened windows on the WorkBench, some of the
Icons displayed were distorted. I am going to try a A2091 in my system, but
expect no better results.
This seems to be the extent of the errors. I use a HST at 19.2 with out
trouble. I get 675k per second read rates on my HD. My RAM board passes all
the tests I can find to put it through. My accelerator passes all tests also
(and, further, I get the read/write errors even when the accelerator is not
in the system). Mouse and joystick ports seem fine. Parallel port responds
just dandy with sound samplers (AM3.0), DigiView 4.0, and printers.
My system consists of A2000, CSA Mega-Midget racer (33mhz w/512k static ram
and 2meg dynamic ram), Supra ram board populated to 8meg and Supra WordSync
HD interface. I have two internal floppies, a SyQuest 44meg removable
(problems before I got it), and my HD is a CDC-Wren 3 (150 meg).
SupraRAM and SupraHD cards have been replaced by Supra since the accident.
The CSA-MMR was repaired by CSA after the accident (it had blown a RAM
chip).
I need some help in finding out what is wrong with my system. I am nolonger
in warrentee, and a motherboard replacement will cost $400. If there are any
ideas out there, I would love to hear them (ah... read them).
Thanks in advance,
Dan Bendiksen.
