I just watched the third show of SPACEFLIGHT today, and some footage of the Apollo 11 LM liftoff taken out of the window made me wonder about this question: is there any film evidence that any of the flags at the various Apollo landing sites were knocked over by the exhaust blast of the LM liftoff? You can't tell on the Apollo 11 footage (though the flag seems to really be taking a beating) but I know there were cameras on the Lunar Rovers of the later flights, and they should have been able to show the site well after liftoff. Authur C. Clarke describes (in IMPERIAL EARTH) a battle between two factions of lunar preservationists - one group wants to put the flag at Tranquillity back up ("we're only RESTORING it"). In "Apollo Expeditions to the Moon" (NASA SP-350) Buzz Aldrin says he looked out the window long enough during liftoff to see the flag fall over. Phil

Well, Buzz had better get back up there and put that flag right. After all, you're not supposed to let the flag touch the ground.
