I'm interested in hearing success stories about speeding up the AT2286 card. I've been interested in getting one for a long time (even when they cost > $1000) but the two things that discouraged me from doing so was the relatively bad graphics support (though this is understandable considering the scan rates of EGA and VGA) and the low speed (is it still only 8Mhz?) I'm interested in hearing both about accelerator cards (286, 386, 368sx) or hardware hacks. I have some specific questions in mind as well: - I have seen a compatibily chart posted on Compuserve that lists a couple of 386 add-in boards (or at least 386sx) that work, but nothing to indicate what kinds of incompatibilty problems may have occured. Anyone have experiences with these? - Why can't you just replace the CPU chip with say a 12Mhz or even a 16 or 20Mhz 286 chip, replace the clock crystal, and be done with it? (forgive my hardware ignorance). You can get a 12Mhz 286 for $20, seems like a pretty cost effective upgrade to me. Are there other chips that would be affected? Could those be replaced as well? I'm willing to hack a little (though I draw the line at making new traces and holes on the board, or something like that :) I've been given the opportunity to put in additional hours at my job by working at home, and I don't have the space for another computer. I'd be working with dBase and some Windows software. To me, Windows 3.0 on a 8Mhz machine is intolerable (though considering I get payed by the hour...) Waiting 10 seconds for a menu to come down is not the way I want to spend my time. I posted a similar message a while back and the only response was the post of the compuserve compatibility list. Though I think in that post I was asking specifically about 386 upgrade boards. Anyway, any thoughts are appreciated. Thanx in advance, Scot Forbes psycho@cs.ucsb.edu
