[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Faster chips for CBM 68020 Card?

jeffg@comspec.uucp (Jeff Goebel) (05/14/91)

It's hard keeping rumours from facts. Tel me please:

Can you change anything in a Commodore 68020 card to increase speed?
I have heard tell of replacement chips which are faster than 14Mhz.

What's the scoop?

With the 2620 card, the easy way to increase speed (easy he said?) is
to swap the existing 110ns memory chips out for 80ns memory chips. That and
a jumper change allows you to run a zero wait state system. It gives about
a 17% improvement, according to Jez San's Speed 2.0 program.
Swapping out the processor wouldn't give you much without some major
changes, since the 2620 is a syncronous 14.32MHz board, changing the 68881
to a faster one and adding the crystal oscillator would work though, and
in fact they have jumpers and a place on the board for the crystal.

You can put all the faster chips in an A2620 you like. The only one that can
make the system go any faster is a faster math chip (only an issue if you're
doing heavy math-oriented things). The 14MHz 68881 can be replaced with a
25MHz or faster 68882 and an accompanying faster crystal module. There's no
way to speed up the 68020/68851 combination.
