[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] CDROM-FS comments??

daves@hpdtczb.HP.COM (Dave Scroggins) (05/17/91)

I see adds for CD ROMS that attach to Macs and Apples and have drooled.

(Ahh -- to have all the worlds knowledge on a few small pieces of
plastic! eh so I exaggerate, but 410 FISH discs on one CD disc seems
pretty nice)

I just read about something called CDROM-FS that will work with
many CD ROM drives with SCSI interfaces.

Has anyone ever used this thing?
(In particular with a 3000)

It reads something called ISO 9660 discs. Is this the standard format?
What are other formats like?

Any feedback would be nice.

Thanks much,

Dave S.

Correct. It's available from HyperMedia Concepts in the USA for (I think)
$50.00

I have used it on an A2500/30 with GVP hardcard and Sony CDROM. Works great,
well worth the price if you are planning on accessing ISO 9660 CDROM's.
There are a couple of features of the ISO 9660 file system which are in the
process of being added into CDROM-FS (interleave format and XAR (Extended
Attribute Records)) which currently prevents it from working with a handfull of
the couple odd thousand titles avaialble in ISO 9660 format (for instance the
NASA collectons). The author is hard at work adding in this support.

ISO 9660 is an emerging industry standard file system layout (a VFS or Volume
File Structure). It is specific to CDROM and is used extensively in PC and MAc
environments. Soon to be available on DEC and Amiga as well!

There are about a couple thousand titles ranging from PD software to entire
encyclopedia and dictionaries, to medical refernece libraries and other
reference works, to the complete works of Shakespeare.

You can order a catalog from

	The Bureau of Electronic Publishing
	1-800-828-4766

Prices for sets range from $10.00 to $20,000.000 (really!)
