Yah, that's what Windows does (or did)... have flags to indicate whether
a bitmap structure was chunky or plane, and so on.

Agreed, tho I think that's one of the really tough problems to solve.
So most systems simply put the work back onto the programmer instead.

Yes, it's what needs to be done (after recovering from sun-poisoning over
the last week or so, I just posted a response in c.s.a.graphics about this).
I guess followups should go there also.

DIG's a big job, tho!  Especially trying to make good animation possible.
