[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Long paralel cable

ronald@ecl014.UUCP (Ronald van Eijck) (05/18/91)

Hello out there,

For a cutomer of me I am in need of information.

They have a setup of a HP Laserjet III. Using a serial connection and a
data switch they have 4 PC's connected to it.

Now wat I'd like to do is to connect an Amiga to it using the centronics
connection of the laserjet. (and Amiga ofcourse)

My questions are:

- Is it easy to switch the printer from serial to paralel and back?

- Is it possible (using some hardware booster) to connect the amiga
to it using a 40 meter (about 120 ft) cable?

Thanx,

I don't know about switching the printer from serial to parallel,
but if you are going to have a real long Parallel Cable beware:

The propagation delay on the 'real long' cable may cause
garbled data on your printer. (I don't know what the max length is)
but because the Prop. delay is not constant and the longer the cable
the more 'pronounced' it can be (because all bits may not arrive at
the same time).......

			just FYI....
