[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Has anyone got DIGIFLEX accel w/12Mhz co-pro?

igreenaw@hemel.bull.co.uk (ian greenaway) (05/23/91)

I've seen an ad in the May '91 AmigaWorld by Aamiga Warehouse for an accelerator
for the Amiga. Its called DigiFlex and apparently has a 16Mhz 68000 and 12Mhz
68881. The price is about $125.

Does anyone have it?
Is it any good?
What speed increase do you get?
Any software that doesn't get on with it?

All these questions and more (possibly) must be answered before I part with
any of my pounds sterling - I'm in the UK see !!!

Thanx in advance for any and all replies.

E-Mail or follow-up -- I'll get it either way !!

This is the old Creative Microsystem Processor Accelerator. DigiFeX took
over the marketing of all those products when CMI went away. The board is a
syncronous 14.32MHz (slightly less with a PAL Amiga) 68000 with a math chip
setup as a peripheral device (the only way you can talk to one with a 68000).
$125 seems to me to be a fairly good price, less than retail anyway, especially
if you get the 68881 in the bargan. Don't expect to see blinding speedups from
this board, but you should be able to see something like 10% overall and much
better for any software that's using the mathieee(doub|sing)(trans|bas).libraries.

I have one still in my 1000 (20MHz 68881) and never have any problems
with it. In most cases, it should work the same for you. Note that mine is the
older version that didn't have room for a ROM chip.

There are certainly better accelerators out there now, but you'll be
hard put to find one cheaper. And if you're writing your own code for the
68881, you can do some wonderful things with this...
