[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Virtual Reality

PHALLOUS@KSUVM.KSU.EDU (Jay Goodwin) (06/06/91)

I'm the president of The Dream Factory, and we are currently
designing a virtual reality system based on the Amiga. It will provide
stereo vision and sound, as well as glove input. What we would like to
see is input from the current Amiga users on what they would like,
option wise, from our system. Thank you for any input you may have.

Please e-mail any responses to me as I do not have access to the
comp-sys-amiga lists. Jay Goodwin, The Dream Factory

Terrific! I'm sure to be your first customer! Your project description
isn't much to go by, but one hot topic is the use of non-linearity in AI
engines for VR; that is, program chance into the actions and forms of
objects within the VR environment. This raises some ethical questions
that haven't entirely been dealt with, but I think that a safe threshold
could be managed, especially if the user is merely reacting to the
environment without actual *physical* stimuli. We're probably a long
ways from that.

Check out alt.virtual-reality for general discussions of VR.

If you're looking for Amiga-specific advice, I think 'real-time' should
be stressed. It's the best platform for near-realtime rendering,
although pre-programmed VR environments would be faster and more
entertaining (kind of a flight simulator approach, I suppose).
