[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Must the first SCSI device be #1?

wally@athenanet.com (Wally Hartshorn) (06/16/91)

Here's my setup:
	A2000HD with A2090A controller and Rodime 40meg ST-506
Quantum ProDrive LPS 105S (105meg SCSI drive)
	1meg chip RAM
Microbotics 8-Up board with 4meg installed
	External AIR floppy drive
	Supra 2400 modem
	Star NX-10 printer
	Workbench 1.3.2 with ARP replacements

I was having some problems before I bought the Quantum drive. The BBS
which I run was crashing and getting corrupted. I suspected the problem
was a bad sector on the Rodime. I needed more space anyway, so I ordered
the new Quantum drive. My dealer called his distributor, who said they
were out of them and would have to order it. Later the distributor called
back to say that they had found one and would ship it. It arrived without
any documentation. I don't know whether there's supposed to be docs for
it or not. If there are, please let me know so I can try to talk Quantum
into sending me some.

After a bit of guesswork and a call to Quantum's tech support, I finally
figured out the information I needed to prep and format the drive. It
seemed to work fine. However, it came with the jumpers set to be SCSI
device #7. Since I didn't have the docs, I didn't know how to change it
to be SCSI device #1, so I just left it that way. It seems to work, but
the system has been crashing fairly often. Furthermore, it seems to
crash in "clusters". In other words, it will run fine for two days, then
crash, crash again when I reboot, crash again, then work fine. The system
boots fine normally, although it sometimes hangs during the boot process.
After it has booted, however, it will sometimes crash when I try to use
a simple shell command. (By the way, when it hangs during the boot
process, the screen is a light gray color.)

Question: Is it best to have the lone SCSI device configured to be SCSI
device #1? Could that be causing my problems? If so, does anyone know
how to configure the Quantum LPS 105S to be SCSI device #1? Can I change
my drive from device 7 to device 1 without losing the data on the drive?
Do I need to prep the drive again, or simply change the MountList entry?
Keep in mind that my controller is the A2090A, NOT the A2091.
