[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Amiga 500 guru after warm up with certain sound

slau@slau.lrcd.com (Stephen Lau) (06/17/91)

To all fellow Amigans,

I've a very weird problem with my Amiga 500. My configuration is an
Amiga 500, with the 501 installed, plus a Trumpcard 500, 105 meg quantum,
and a 4 meg Meta4 ramcard (thus 4 meg fast, 1 meg chip), and an ICD
flicker-free video. My problem is, after the machine got warmed up,
it would crash with certain programs when the programs want to make
sounds, my machine would emit some siren sound (?), and the machine would
crash with a guru meditation, the first no. is *ALWAYS* 00000004 (does it
help for you to know that?), not sure if it would help you figure out
what's wrong with my machine.

The funny thing is, it would crash *ONLY* with those programs, the others
would work just fine. Those that crashed include Jrcomm (when it beeps),
all the recent SSI AD&D stuff (Dragonstrike, Eye of Beholder), Dungeon
Master, to name a few. I have to turn off Jrcomm's bell and it wouldn't
crash anymore. What's more weird is that all those crashed boot up via
AmigaDos!! None (None!) of those were booted under a custom dos (like
most euro games, they *ALL* work!).

One of the local wizard said it could be Paula. Now the only authorized
Amiga dealer here doesn't have much reputation around the local users,
and since they charge about $50 just to look at the machine, I would
think to ask for help here first, and see if it can be fixed by just
a replacement of Paula or CIA chips, and I would also save some money.
Besides, I have opened my machine several times, several being to install
the ICD flicker free video, and lost some screws here and there, I would
wonder if they would even service my machine :) But my machine is way past
warranty anyway.

So any help, how about the C= hardware gurus?? Mr. Dave Haynie?? Can
anyone single out what is the problem??

By the way, this is not a joke (if it sounds like), I really have this
problem!! (Oh, detaching the hardisk, Meta4, and FFV doesn't help, so it's
not their fault) Thanks in advance for any help.

To err is human, to really screw things up, you need a MS-DOS machine.
