[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] A590 Upgrade Problem

cs_d461@ux.kingston.ac.uk (Phillip Harris) (06/17/91)

Can someone please help me, I have been able to get hold of a brand new, Fujitsu
2614ESA hard disc mechanism (182Mb) which I wanted to install in my A590 to
replace that heap of junk 20Mb thingy. The problem I am having is that,
basically, it doesn't work! What happens is that I have the thing connected,
internally, to the 50pin SCSI connector and the A590's power connector, power
the thing up with autoboot disabled, the drive performs its usual power on
self test, then leaves the disc access light turned ON. I drop in the A590 setup
disc, it begins to boot, and then the A590 tries to access the drive, the access
light on the A590 board comes on and the access light on the hard drive goes
off. The whole lot then sits around and contemplates the end of life as we know
it. Doing a keyboard reset resets the Amiga but not the A590 or the hard drive.

I noticed in the docs for the A590 and the Fujitsu drive that the A590 has a pin
labelled ATN on the internal interface, but on the external DB25 connector and
on the Fujitsu drive the same line is labelled NOT ATN, could Commodore have
messed up here or is it just a misprint in the A590 manual?

I have tried the Fujitsu at ID's 0-7, with synchronous transfers enabled and
disabled, parity enable and disabled etc. but nothing makes any difference.

Any suggestions, possible solutions or anything would be gratefully recieved.

By the way, I phoned both Fujitsu and Commodore about this, Fujitsu were very
helpfull, courteous etc. whilst Commodore's techie guy that I spoke to was
almost rude, told me to set the ID to 6 and put the phone down. OK, neither
company managed to solve my problem, but I know which of the two I would prefer
to deal with in the future.

Fujitsu .. One, Commodore .. Nill!
