[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] IBM keyboard interface

dave@csis.dit.csiro.au (David Campbell) (06/16/91)

Hi!

Recently there was a posting by Eric Rudolph, rudolpe@jacobs.cs.orst.edu
about his IBM Keyboard Interface Project.

Can somebody please report their experiences with this interface? My A1000
keyboard is getting really bad and I'm looking towards a replacement.

In Eric's documentation he states that he's prepared to build it for US$25,
and that he'd be glad to answer any questions but either there is some
problem with mail or he got bombarded with mail and he's thus not answering
mine.

If the interface turns out to be good I'll be wondering if somebody would be
prepared to build one and sell it to me as I don't have the equipment or
the expertise to build this interface.

Since the Northgate Omnikey is now available with an Amiga switch on it,
(albeit one for the 2000 plug config), it'd probably be easier for you to
buy that and just convert the plug output to fit the A1000. And you'd get a
hell of a keyboard. This is the solution that I'm contemplating for myself.

Anyone out there know the difference between the A2000 kb modular plug
config and the that of the A1000?

The A2000 uses an IBM style Din connector, not a modular plug. The A1000
uses the 4 pin telco handset type modular connector. The different connectors
are the only compatibility problems I know of.

A relatively recent issue of Amazing Computing had an article on building an
adapter for using an A-2000 keyboard on an A-1000. I don't remember the
date of the issue but it was within the past 6 months.

And for about the same price as the Northgate keyboard, The Grapevine Group
will sell you a genuine A-1000 keyboard (It will fit in the garage, the
Northgate won't ;-). The Grapevine group advertises in Amazing Computing
so look in a recent issue for address and phone number.

Since I've not yet ordered from them, I cannnot comment on the service or
quailty of The Grapevine Group. Same goes for the Northgate keyboard, I've
seen one but not used it.

I've ordered two things from the Grapevine Group in the past: a
150 Watt power supply for my 500 and a 1.3 Rom chip. I received speedy service
for both things I ordered (they came in about 3 days) and I am very happy
with the quality/price of both. I've never had to return anything to them
so I don't know how they handle that.
