[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Dvorak keyboard on Amiga?

snowdond@r2.cs.man.ac.uk (D.N.Snowdon (MSc PJ)) (06/12/91)

Has anyone tried hooking up a Dvorak (sp?) type keyboard to an Amiga?
Does anyone know where I might get hold of one of these?
		thanks

Martin, aren't the keys on the keyboard "sculptured"? Wouldn't this mean that
just re-arranging the key-caps -- although giving the correct key map -- would
not provide a correct keyboard feel?

Well, you pop up the keys on your keyboard and place them in the Dvorak
pattern, the use your SetMap program with the USA2 keymap. Use your
ShowKey program to set the correct keycaps (after setmap'ing). Remember,
when you SetMap, EVERYTHING is affected from that point on which uses the
keyboard.

Hmm, every Amiga comes already with a Dvorak keymap (is it usa2?)!
So you setmap this keymap, take your original keyboard and just exchange
some keytops :-). (Or are there also differences in keys with two really
different meanings, like 1/! ?)

Why not use the one included with your Amiga? Just "setmap usa2" and
rearrange the keycaps.

I wonder who took the excitement out in the first place?

Not quite, unfortunately! I know that the Scribble! editor I have
doesn't care about key mappings. It must use its own internal keymap.
Also, MicroEMACS 3.9 did the same thing - an internal lookup table for
translating raw keycodes to characters. I hope no-one is doing that sort
of thing these days.

Yes, they are. I tried doing this with my 3000, and the keymap was
ALMOST perfect (see below). But the keys themselves sucked in their new
position. For instance the "-_" key is MUCH higher than any key around it in
the Dvorak layout, and other keys were much lower than they should be.
I believe my old 1000's keys were "flat", and would probably make good
Dvorak keyboards, but the units used on 500's, 2000's, and 3000's are
definately NOT made for the keys to be moved to new positions.
Also, is there a KeyMap editor for 2.0 yet? For some reason the
"usa2" layout has the "[{" and "]}" keys mapped incorrectly (at least as
far as the ANSI/ISO Dvorak keyboard layout is concerned). They are supposed
to work the same on the Dvorak layout as the normal layout (a shifted '['
gives you '{'), but in the usa2 layout a shifted '[' gives you ']'. The reason
the ANSI/ISO layout is the way it is was due to a desire to allow you to
use the same key caps as a normal IBM-101 keyboard for use in the ANSI
layout. I don't see why usa2 should differ.

No, I don't think so. The keyboard on my A1000 had the same problem.
