I am not up on current US pricing of RAM but I know that the price is ALWAYS
lower then up here in Canada due to two reason. One, your dollar is worth
more then a Canadian dollar so the exchange rate has to be considered. Two,
there is a larger market in the US. With this information and knowledge of
the current price on 1Mx4 80ns ZIP SCRAM in Canada, I'd say RAM in the US
should be 4 meg for under $300 or approximately $70/meg.

Lets say RAM in Canada is CDN$60 a meg..After PST(OST?) and GST, its
CDN$276 for 4 megs...

Lets say I order 4 megs of ram at US$56 a meg and pay $8 shipping from CA, we
are at US$232 just to get it here, and thats free of sales tax...Lets say you
lived in Windsor, just to keep it simple, and you and me were friends..I
ordered this ram for you, and it came to CDN$264...You drive over here, pay
the $3 toll, and 2.5% duty to bring the ram into Canada. We are at
CDN$273....With GST and PST plus your local price, can you beat that? I don't
know what duty would be, 2.5% was a guess, but you can bring in up to $400
per person duty-free if you stay in the states 48 hours I believe...And the
way the border is grossly backed up with Canadians bringing stuff back,
sometimes they don't even bother with duty...Same with the US side, but it
is lazyness, not hundreds of people waiting to be processed that causes them
not to bother...

Check your premise that it is always cheaper...Add artifical costs like the
GST that we don't pay here...Even state sales tax in Michigan is 1/2 of
Ontario's Provincial 8% sales tax....If I am wrong, please correct me...But
generally the logic is correct, its just the premise thats wrong...

How much is SCRAM in Canada? Is it REALLY ALWAYS THAT much cheaper??? How
would it compair for me to cross the boarder and buy it and bring it back from
Windsor?? Take your Canadian dollars and divide them by 1.14 to get US
Dollars...Don't worry about duty...

Plus, installation is of course, ALWAYS extra, and you're not going to lug a
$2995 MSRP computer across the border to have work done to it...My assumptions
are all on "install yourself", and putting ram in the A3000 yourself isn't
easy...I was taking mine apart saying, "Why didn't I pay someone to do this?!"
Of course it worked out all right in the end, but taking the machine apart
that costs more than my Air Conditioner and Furnace did puts me into
mega-paranoid mode(I am normally paranoid)...I believe the rate was $38 to put
the ram in, if I allreadyhad the ram...So the final cost would have been $65 a
meg in my case if Iwould have had a dealer install install it...

I have recently purchased RAM for my 3000 (6/21). Tower 7
technology (800-342-8777) is selling 80 nS static-column RAM for
$30/chip. That works out to $120/4 Meg, considerably less than
$70/meg.

Ooops! After re-reading the above article, I realized that it should
read $240/4 Meg. Which is on ly slightly less than $70/Meg. Please forgive
my brief mental lapse :-)

4 Meg requires 8 chips, not 4. So it comes to $60/meg.

Don't want to burst your bubble, but if you purchased 1mbx4's, you are only
getting 2 megs, which you won't be able to plug in your A3000 until you get 4
more chips...and its $60 a meg at the price you paid....Still less than $70 a
meg like you pointed out, but not considerably less...
