[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Connecting PS printer to 3000

andrewsr@u2.rutgers.edu (Rich Andrews) (06/21/91)

Hello All.

I thought this would be a snap, but I am having trouble using my
new NEC SilentWriter2 Model 90 with my 3000. I have been using an
Epson for 6 years without a glitch. Which printer should I pick out
of the preferences for a PostScript printer?

I have tried HP LaserWriter, Epson, and NEC Pinwriter. Although my
printer says "Processing," nothing ever comes out. What am I doing
wrong?

The Nec SilentWriter2 Model 90 has a number of different modes. The default
is Postscript. Preferences does not support Postscript.

If you are printing from something like Professional Page or DynaCADD you
choose the Postscript option and it goes out the parallel port to the Nec
SilentWriter2 using the Postscript language. If you output as a Dot Matrix
printer (or regular PRINT from most Amiga programs) then the output is
through Preferences (PRT:). If you output Dot Matrix to a Postscript printer
it will filter through all the Dot Matrix codes and determine there is nothing
to printer (this is what is happening when your printer says PROCESSING).

If you want to printer through Preferences you have to change modes on the
Nec printer. First, in Preferences choose the HP LaserWriter printer. Second,
take the Nec offline (use the Online button). Press the MENU button. Press
NEXT button until SETUP appears in the LCD display. Press SELECT button. Press
NEXT until SOFTWARE INTF appears in the LCD display. Press SELECT. Press NEXT
until EMULATE LJ IIP appears in the LCD display. Press SELECT. Put the printer
online and it is now an HP LaserWriter IIp. if you want to change back to
the Postscript mode do all of the above EXCEPT press NEXT until POSTSCRIPT
appears in the LCD display in place of EMULATE LJ IIP.

Thanks, the SW Model 2 does print postscript from Pagestream. I did
have to set the printer to HP LaserJet to print to prt:
