[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] A500 internal drive cannot write, but Amiga DOS thinks it does

joost@imladris.cdi-as.ce.philips.nl (Joost van Vroonhoven) (06/27/91)

OK, we (ie. my wife and I) just bought this nice second hand A500.
Kickstart 1.2, internal drive, 512K, about three years old mostly collecting
dust ie. almost unused.
A few floppies came with it, one with the SCA virus :-(

I took my A2000 startup-sequence, reduced it and wrote it to floppy on my A2000.
All was well, the thing booted WB 1.3.
Then I modified the windows and icons position and selected Snapshot.
But the changes were gone after reboot. Hmm.

No write protect was NOT on, even more: no error whatsoever.
More testing revealed writing to ANY floppy in the internal drive was
successful according to AmigaDOS but NO CHANGES WERE MADE ON THE FLOPPY.

How is this possible?

It is quite possible it has never worked : the previous owner only played
a few games on it and I found NO MODIFICATIONS done on any of the floppies that
came with the machine. Also there still are stickers over the screws in
the bottom so this A500 has never been opened since it left the factory.

Anybody any ideas were I look ?

Thanx , Joost
