[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Bandwidth used by Productivity Mode

dkelly@boffin.Aus.Sun.COM (Dave Kelly) (06/28/91)

Hi,

my faithful Amiga 1000 is presently waiting for its new Phoenix board upgrade, which will allow it to use the ECS chips and other goodies. (For those who don't know, the Phoenix board is an Aussie-designed-and-built replacement motherboard for the A1000. It supports: ECS chip set, on-board SCSI controller, clock, B2000-compatible video and expansion slots [if you have a >A1000-sized case :-)], etc.)

Anyway, while I've been waiting for my Phoenix board, I've been reading up a bit on the ECS chip set and AmigaDOS 2.0. All the articles I've read make much noise about how much bus time Productivity Mode screens (640 x 480) will take. This somewhat concerns me, so I'm after some answers to (naive) questions re this, namely:

1)	How bad IS this problem ?
	(i.e. what are the symptoms ? - slower M68000 operation, etc ?)

2)	Is only accesses to chip memory affected (i.e. not fast memory) ?

3)	Are other things (which use chip memory) such as floppy disk access
	affected ?

4)	When running Productivity Mode, is the situation alleviated by dropping
	from 4 colours to 2 ? Is a 2-colour screen practical ?

5)	In general, how possible/appropriate is it to run a standard 4-colour
Productivity Mode screen all the time, as the normal Workbench Screen ?

Thanks for any and all advice.......

Dave Kelly
