Hi Amiga guys, I just bought a Quantum Pro105s (SCSI) by mail-order (very cheap!!), but the installation docs wasn't for Amiga. It was for Mac. My question is: How many heads has the HD? How many cylinders has the HD? How many sectors/track has the HD? The installation program 'Prep' needs this info to be able to initiate the HardDisk. What I made was that I just made up these values like 7 heads, 2500 cyl's etc., but then I got the fault 'Device not PREPed' from Prep. That must be because the values are incorrect I have a ST-506 Toshiba HD already so this HD is the second one (SCSI) in my system. If someone has any information abount the heads, cylinders & sec/tracks, I would appreciate if you could send me an E-mail. If you have a MountList, send it aswell. Can by handy to have when I configurate my HD. PLEASE HELP!! I guess many AMiga-owners has this type of HardDisk, so please dig in your devs-directory!!! My address should be up there, but here it's again: etxpihl@texas.ericsson.se Regards Tomas -- Tomas Pihl ; E-mail: etxpihl@texas.ericsson.se Erisson Telecom AB ; Memo : etx.etxpihl / _ |o o| Stockholm, Sweden <---- ; -- Great country!! /.._/ \___~

I find this also VERY STRANGE!!. I got some answers on my question and all of them has different answers. I phoned my local dealer last night and he said that I didn't have to use 'Prep' to install my new SCSI drive. It was just to mount it and format it. I tried that, but as I guessed, it didn't work. I haven't tried 'Prep' with the new values I got from all of you, but I will. Perhaps someone that has intalled a Quantum Pro105S in an A2000 with A2090a can give me some help. E-mail is fine. Please help me, because I'm sitting on $500 and I can't use it!!! The only significant number is the total number of available blocks that is reported by the drive. You can factorize it between heads, cyliders and sectors any way you want as long as the total is equal or smaller to the available disk space. -- Markku Kolkka mk59200@cc.tut.fi

I think the confusion arises from the fact that there are two different Q105 models. The first one is the 6 head, 3.5" half height, the second one is the single platter low profile 3.5". The half heights are being dumped at $350 or so, so low profiles are $450. The one inch drive is the LP105S, the half height is simply 105S. I'd imagine the 3000s have the newer drives, while the "I just got a cheap 105 meg drive" questions concern the older variety. OR

Surfaces = 6 BlocksPerTrack = 34 LowCyl = 1 HighCyl = 1004 This information is as reported by the GVP FaastPrep (tm) software. The Quantum PRO 105 S has a formatted capacity of 205,074 blocks of 512 bytes each, which are addressed as block numbers from 0 to 205,073. Thus, you may enter anything for surfaces/etc... as long as you result with less than 205,074 blocks. The number of blocks computes as NumBlocks = Surfaces * BlocksPerTrack * (HighCyl - LowCyl + 1); Physically the Quantum PRO 105 S drive has 1,019 data cylinders and 6 data heads. It has 2 distinct data zones: The outer zone is 831 cylinders large and stores 35 blocks per track, the inner zone has 188 cylinders with 28 blocks per track. These include blocks used for remapping, and are thus not available for data storage. As you see, you cannot match your mountlist with the physical layout on the drive. _ --(_) | | Andreas Hofbauer, Software Designer |bsc| bueroautomation AG (ECG001) ---
