[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] A500, ROM, 1.3, 2.0

bull@vaxc.cc.monash.edu.au (06/27/91)

A thought occoured to me yesterday (yes miracles do happen :)
about the 2.0 roms and the A500.

I'm under the *impression* that the 1.2/1.3 rom in the A500 is 256
Kbytes, that 2.0 will need a 512 Kbyte rom, that a standard 512 Kbyte rom
is not pin compatible with a 256 Kbyte rom, and that if a 2.0 rom is released
of the A500 it may need an adaptor unit to plug into the rom socket on the
motherboard. What am I getting at ?

The rom socket in the A500 is less than 1 inch from the 68000
socket. An adaptor unit will raise the hight of the rom, which might cause
clearance problems for people with accelerator or ram boards fitted to the
68000 socket.

I'm not a hardware expert. All of the above is personal speculation
and all of the above could be completely false.

True

Untrue.

The 128K x 16 ROM used in A500s and A2000s is pin compatible with a 256K x 16
ROM, which will be the medium used for 2.0. However, some A500s (but not
A2000s) were released before that 512K pinout was finalized. They guessed
at the free pin that would be used, but guessed wrong, so a small tower or a
wire jumper on the ROM will be necessary for older A500s.

You don't need any adaptor. When ROMs are available, just plug 'em in.
The A500 is engineered with 512K ROMS in mind.
