[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Floptical drives

ggk@tirith.ocunix.on.ca (Gregory Kritsch) (02/13/21)

Does anyone out there know anything about the "Floptical" drive which
was mentioned in Byte a while ago (ca. release of NeXT). It was a SCSI
disk which used special 3.5" disks with optical tracking information to
provide 20 Megs of storage.

I'm looking into backup options for my Amiga right now, and this is one
of the things which came to mind. I haven't heard a lot about the
floptical (but I haven't been listening), so I'm wondering if anyone else
has. Anyone who has one hanging off their Amiga, I'd love to hear about
it.

For reference, I have an "A1090" (A590 plugged into my A1000, with a
sticker covering the vile Commodore 5xx part number) with which I plan
to drive it. I'm also curious as to what kind of tape backup systems
are available.
