[rec.audio.high-end] Welcome to Rec.Audio.High-End

tjk@csd4.csd.uwm.edu (Thomas Krueger) (01/25/90)

Welcome to the new USENET group, Rec.Audio.High-End.

The purpose of this newsgroup is to gateway with the Internet mailing list
Info-High-Audio, a forum for discussion of all aspects of High-End audio.

You may be wondering, since this newsgroup is moderated, what exactly IS
High-End audio? Is it all this fancy equipment I am never going to be able
to afford? Is it super-duper mono-crystal Teflon-insulated cable woven into
fancy patterns? Is it a $10,000(US) turntable that won't track my old
Steppenwolf record but will, on a good day, be able to play a $100(US) LP?

Well, it's a bit hard to tell you what High-End audio really IS, because it
encompasses so much! But, I can pretty much tell you what it isn't. It isn't
a $1000(US) rack system bought off the department store floor, carelessly
placed in a room with no attention paid to speaker placement or to proper
equipment setup.

Those who participate in the fascinating (and sometimes frustrating!) hobby
of High-End audio actually LISTEN to the music being played and wonder to
themselves, "Is this really as good as it gets? Can I make it more accurate
and have it sound good at the same time?"

There are many ways of acquiring a High-End system. Perhaps the easiest way
is to collect all the pieces a reviewer or two raves about, and connect them
up. Another way is to collect older or less esoteric pieces and modify them.
Another is the old-fashioned way... build it yourself.

I hope Rec.Audio.High-End will serve all three of these groups.

Becoming an audiophile is not an overnight practice. The ear needs to be
trained just as the palate needs to be trained to entertain fine wine.

I thought you might like to know a bit about me, since I am moderating.
Well, here goes:

I am an electronics technician, and started in audio when I was in high
school as an outgrowth of an interest in electronics. My main interest is in
vacuum tube power amplifier modification, although I have modified tube
preamps as well. In my job, and as favors to friends, I have repaired and
modified a wide array of equipment, from guitar amplifiers to high-end
equipment of varied types.

Here's some administrivia: post in the usual way for moderated groups, or
mail your submission to "info-high-audio@csd4.csd.uwm.edu". I archive
digests of Info-High-Audio; Rec.Audio.High-End will be bi-directionally
gatewayed into Info-High-Audio and archived as well. Send me mail for
details.

I can say (quite proudly, I think) that I have never rejected a submission
for Info-High-Audio, and have only returned one for re-writing, which I then
published. Needless to say, flames and "what's the best $40 pair of speakers"
are hardly appropriate subjects for Rec.Audio.High-End, and will be
returned.

I welcome your comments on what YOU think is appropriate; this is not MY
newsgroup, it is OUR newsgroup.
