[rec.audio.high-end] ORTF correction/lp noise vs. arm movement/Dolby HX

Steve_Graham@ub.cc.umich.edu (04/12/90)

1. Sorry, the ORTF distance is 17cm, not 117 cm as my wandering fingers
posted last time out...
2. (replying) What we normally consider to be LP noise (ticks, pops, rumble,
hiss, etc.) is not caused by anything in the tonearm. However if the arm
resonates that will accentuate noise, and if it isn't rigid, or if the
bearings are loose and can rattle, etc. etc., artifacts can be produced
which will muddy the sound or add sonic garbage.
(By the way, today's cheap record players with P-mount cartriges aren't
bad for cheap record players--though the arms resonate and all that...)
3. Dolby HX is not by any means just for "anal retentive" audio purists.
IF it works it does worthwhile things. But if it isn't set up right it can
be horrible.
