Hello from the UK, Reading vol8 #17 Lesley Schneider asks about sources of ribbon tweeters. They seem to be generating a lot of interest in the UK and Europe at the mo' with two major manufacturers bringing out new speakers with ribbon units. One of them is Celestion - they've released a range 3000,5000 and 7000 with a 14" ribbon midrange/tweeter. They've designed the ribbon from scratch and have got around the old ribbon problem of very low efficiency. These speakers are EXCELLENT - don't know if they've reached your shores yet but look out for them when they do. They are totally lucid and transparent from midrange through to top-end - I've had a pair on trial for a week, and they make every other speaker I've ever listened to sound coloured in comparison. Uk selling price is 800 pounds to 1100 pounds. They're quite a big box too so bass response is good (although British taste differs slightly from you guys over the pond - but that's another story ...). Lesley, Celestion may well sell the ribbon separately, I'm not sure. If you want to conatct them, their address is: Celestion International Ltd, Ditton Works, Foxhall Road, Ipswich Suffolk IP3 8JP England. The other manufacturer by the way is SD Acoustics. Not heard there model yet but it's getting rave reviews. And yes - Decca ribbons are still available in the UK if you're interested. tom. ____________________________________________________________ Tom Jackson, Advanced Computer Architecture Group, Dept. of Computer Science, University of York, Heslington, YORK. Reading vol8 #17 Lesley Schneider asks about sources of ribbon tweeters. 1. If you're thinking of ribbon "tweeters" I wouldn't recommend what's typically availiable. Phillips and Pioneer units are availiable from Zalytron, Madisound, Parts Express and Radio Shack. The main problem is bad vertical dispersion and bad sensitivity to vertical movement at the crossover frequency because the crossover's so high and the wavelength is so short. This is both my experience and other's. I tried the Shack(Pioneer) version, it's detailed but sort of weird. 2. Sound Accompany has two leaf ("ribbon") drivers that are to be crossed over to at 1 kHz. The larger version is intended for possible sound reinforcement use: high sensitivity and 60 watt power handling. Transducer Technology markets them. 3. Report what you try! bill S.
