There was some discussion awhile back concerning modifications to basic Magnavox CD players that significantly improved their sound. Can some knowledgeable person tell me (1) which models are suitable for this kind of modification and whether they are still being manufactured, (2) where to have such modification done in the San Francisco Bay area, and (3) whether $500 or so can buy better performance than a modified Magnavox. On the subject of the "CD sound": Being a complete novice in this area, I listened to my first high-end CD setup recently (Cal Audio CD player driven by Bryston separates). I was a little shocked at the harshness of the sound (especially violins) and the exaggerated attack; and I can't help asking: "Is this all there is?" Comments very much appreciated.
