There were some people posting remarks about matching expensive electronics with inexpensive speakers. I'd like to see more discussion on this topic. On the other subject, I'm wondering about future upgrades to my own system. Right now, I've a Linn Basik deck, a Hafler DH100 pre-amp, a 50wpc McIntosh dating from 1976, and Magnepan SMGa's. Which do you think would be more audible-a pre-amp upgrade (to say, a VTL Deluxe or Super Deluxe, or Counterpoint SA-1000 or SA-3000) or an amp upgrade (to something like a Counterpoint SA-100, the PS-Audio, the Linn LK-280, or maybe a Mark Levinson no.29 or the baby Krell)? Would it make sense to spend all of my budget on one piece, so that I wouldn't have to buy a replacement for that anytime soon, or should I try to buy components that are about at the same level as each other? I'd rather make a few big steps and have a somewhat mis-matched (in terms of quality) system than make a bunch of small (and ultimately more expensive) steps. Maybe I should try to get the Hafler modified? And yes, the 1st step that I will take is upgrading the Basik to and LP12! thanks david n stivers stiv@rice.edu
