#N:uicsg:5000001:000:1625 uicsg!mzp Mar 23 00:52:00 1984 [ . hi . ] *** FLAME ON *** All this talk about dismantling the network and suing people for the posting of song lyrics, of all things, is really frightening. I find it difficult to believe that people can become so hyper. After all, anyone can turn on the radio and hear the song, and frankly, I enjoy songs more when I know what all the words are. As for dismantling networks, look at the University of Illinois PLATO system. It's still there. Hmm, what an amazing thing. There is a notesfile called "lyrics," which is devoted entirely to requests and postings of lyrics to various songs. Gawd, what lawless heathens exist on that system. Quick, someone get them all and shut it down! The whole notesfile system is subversive!! To compare the posting of song lyrics with Unix source is ludicrous. There is clearly proprietary information in source code, as well as LARGE potential profit/loss. That is something worth being concerned about, but I sincerely hope that no dilwad could be so stupid. Occasionally I am impressed with the caliber of the discussions that take place on this network, but this one seems to have been taken over by staunchy reactionaries (there's a phrase for you). Just step back for a minute, look at yourselves, and say, "God, what a bunch of bullshit over one funny song!" *** FLAME OFF *** (I really am serious, though) Mark Papamarcos ihnp4!uiucdcs!uicsg!mzp "In a particularly obnoxious mood this year" The opinions expressed above should not be construed as those of my employer, future employer, friends, neighbors, pets, or any local moose.
