Since there seem to be several people besides myself having trouble with this, is might be worth mentioning that some mastering studios have constructed makeshift ovens to "dry out" the tapes. At least one reports good (and repeatable) results with this method, the catch being that it is extremely critical to monitor the heating cycle. I'll try and dig up the reference if anyone wants it. Do not overcook your tapes! I too, have sometimes had success with respooling multiple times, but it doesn't always work. (Doesn't usually work for me.) If the tape is in *really* bad shape, just winding it can tear the oxide loose. In that case something like baking is probably your only recourse. None of mine have gotten to that point, thankfully.
