The Rane equipment uses NE5532 op-amps, and can therefore be easily modified with most of the tricks that Jung describes. Using better-quality op-amps, rebiasing the output stage, etc. will help. I used to run a Rane crossover that had been redone with MC34082 op-amps, and had the power supply rebuilt (brought up to +/- 15VDC, larger transformer, major capacitance addition), and the difference was astonishing. Like most of the cheaper pro-audio stuff, it's well built but has some serious corners cut in the audio path. And yes, even for PA work, small changes can make a big difference. --scott (who is building a dolby surround system for use with 35mm film for the William and Mary Film Society this weekend)
