[rec.audio.high-end] Rane Modifications

KLUDGE@AGCB1.LARC.NASA.GOV (11/09/90)

The Rane equipment uses NE5532 op-amps, and can therefore be easily modified
with most of the tricks that Jung describes. Using better-quality op-amps,
rebiasing the output stage, etc. will help. I used to run a Rane crossover
that had been redone with MC34082 op-amps, and had the power supply rebuilt
(brought up to +/- 15VDC, larger transformer, major capacitance addition),
and the difference was astonishing. Like most of the cheaper pro-audio
stuff, it's well built but has some serious corners cut in the audio
path. And yes, even for PA work, small changes can make a big difference.
