[rec.audio.high-end] Cambirdge Sound Works, Subwoofers

mofo@bucsf.bu.edu (jason greene) (11/27/90)

Can someone please elaborate on the difference betwen a high-end satellite
system (such as the one produced by Cambridge Sound works) and that of a
system with a high-end subwoofer?

I am looking very much to increase the bass output of my system, and am
looking as well to upgrade my "rear" channel speakers (as I have been a
loving advocate of Pro-Logic sound for 2 years now).

Currently I have:

Adcom GFA-555 power amp
Denon AVC-700 pro-logic integrated amplifier (used as pre-amp with pre-out)
Klipsch Forte's - front speakers
Boston Accoustics A-40's - rear speakers
Proton solo speaker - center channel speaker
Denon DCD-1420 - cd player
Nakamichi CR-2A - tape deck

What I am wondering about it the separation of the rear channel sound. If
in "pro-logic" mode, will a satellite system still be able to reproduce
bass for the whole system (as I have found with older discs, information is
often not progammed for the rear, with newer discs, some parts are silent)?

Basically, would the above system (in need of better rear channel speakers,
I am a *big* listener of music - I listen about 4 hours a day, as compared
to using my hifi vcr/tv 30 minutes a day) benefit more from a stand alone
subwoofer (running around $500-$600 for a "cheap" subsystem was the best
i've been able to find) or from a high-end satellitle system (such as
Cambridge Sound Works, Boston Accoustics or even [no flames, please] Bose
AM-5's?
