[rec.audio.high-end] Augmenting the House Design

scarton@bingvaxu.cc.binghamton.edu (Mark A. Scarton) (11/27/90)

Does anybody have any references/recommendations about how best to
wire an existing structure? I currently have access through the floor
to the first floor, and via the eaves to the second.

What I'm looking for are:

* ways to avoid having to replicate too much source equipment
* pros/cons of running speaker wires from source vs. switched
  source lines (from preamp) to outboard amps
* room-based volume control
* building equipment into the "theme" of the particular living area
* keeping the equipment as inobtrusive as possible

Any recommendations concerning in-wall speakers for medium
fidelity rooms vs. panels and a "hidden" subwoofer?

Current equipment:

* powered by pair of Mitner 100wpc monoblocks
* Mod Squad line drive for source switching
* Vandersteen 2Ci's
* Yamaha CD player
* Pioneer LCD combi player
* Toshiba 35" screen w/ stereo & S-VHS

Rooms Goals:

* family room (surround sound, movies, medium/high fidelity, good "action")
* living room (high fidelity, minimal equipment showing)
* office (med/hi fidelity, well distributed over long room)
* exercise salon (med fidelity, high energy, well distributed)

I'm also interested in new equipment possibilities that allow me to make
more effective use of the complete system. Examples would be

- a CD magazine system capable of housing 300-500 CDs ... one that can be
  programmed for several hours of play.

- switching and in-wall line control and components

Budget _is_ a consideration, but I won't sacrifice quality. Therefore,
recommendations that can be "layered in" over time would be of high
interest.

Thanks. E-mail responses would be appreciated. If interest warrants, I
will post a summary back to the net.
