[rec.audio.high-end] Old Tapes and Pellon

Steve_Graham@ub.cc.umich.edu (12/05/90)

Thanks to whomever it was that suggested Pellon (?) material. I just
tried it on a squealy tape, and after getting a lot of gummy stuff from
the back-coating (in this case) it played without squeal, and with
hardly any buildup of goo on the transport. In this instance hardly any
oxide was deposited on the pellon, it was mostly junk from the back side of the tape (and it really was sticky to the touch). It's kind of hard to handle,
though. It got away from me once and got wrapped inside the reel (not a good thing!).
Fortunately the tape wasn't a very important one.
(Ampex 406)
It did seem to help a dried out bit of Ampex/Shamrock 041 too (no backcoating)
