[rec.audio.high-end] need info on max. cable length

romeo@argus.Tymnet.COM (Michael Stimac) (12/10/90)

This is a request for people's experience with using long
cables between stereo components. I'm interested in line
level interconnects (eg pre-amp to amp) and what is the
longest length that might be used without serious degradation.

For a variety of reasons, you might want to have a lengthy
interconnect between a pre-amp and an amp. In my case, I'd
like to be able to use the high-quality program sources in
my living room, but listen on speakers in another room of
the house.

Due to (what I perceive as) the difficulties of switching
speaker cables, what I think I'd like to do is use the
spare output of my pre-amp to run back to an 'mid-fi'
amp in the work room, which would drive local speakers.

Such a cable would be 30 or 40 feet long. Is this possible?
The interconnects I've seen for sale are nowhere near this
long. Is this because longer ones won't work well, or because
there's just little demand? Would special (shielded and/or
low-capacitance) cable have to be used?

The living room system will have bi-amped speakers, while
the work room will not; thus I don't see some kind of
switching of the output of the existing amps as feasible.

thanks
