My uncle-in-law is planning to buy a satellite/subwoofer system. He was interested in the Bose or the Cambridge Soundworks. He listens mainly to classical music and uses B&W 801 Matrix(s) at work. Unformtunately he would like to keep the purchase price under $1K. Any comments about these systems and suggestions for other reasonably priced are welcome. Some other possible candidates: Frieds, BA's. -- ************************************************************************** * Michael J. Michael, I don't claim to be a golden eared audiophile, but I do like my tunes so take this with the appropriate grains of salt. My dad was in a similar circumstance last year so he figured what the heck, CSW offers a money back guarentee right? he still has them. likes them a lot. of course he's 63, can't hear much above 13K but loves and knows his classical music. my feelings? satellite/subwoofer speakers don't do it for me. the CSW's are clean enough, provide a transparent soundstage and it is impossible to locate the speakers, but they lack depth. the bass is there but not very forceful. I like the balance of the speakers, and the soundstage, but prefer a speaker with more low end oomph. as for the bose's, I don't feel they compare. I think they are overly bright, have a distinct bump in the lower midrange, (or possibly a hole between the mid and high), and the bass is tubby. I haven't heard them in an optimal listening environment (my small attempt at letting bose off the hook) so it may me an anomaly of placement, but I think not. I don't think either one will hold a candle to the B&W's. in general I haven't heard a satellite/SW that can produce prodidgious volume or depth. I would think he might be better served by a quality set of standard box speakers, perhaps some klipsh's? bill > >-- > ************************************************************************** > * Michael J.
