[rec.audio.high-end] Need DAT hints, pointers, reports, recommendations

schulz@relay.EU.net (Guenter F. Schulz) (01/03/91)

Hi all,

I've been reading this newsgroup for quite a while now and I
noticed that quite a number of you must have purchased a DAT
recorder in the last months. At least there seems to be a
considerable attraction in this topic if one counts the number
of postings about DAT. I got to admit that it finally hit me, too
although one year ago I could stand the temptation quite easily
because of the moon prices one hat to pay for DAT then.

Well, I'd like to ask you now for your opinion about DAT and
related technologies to come (re-recordable optical audio disk).
What is the reason behind the drop of prices of the recent third
generation of DAT recorders (esp. SONY TCK55ES)? Will the DAT
technology only be a gap filler for, say, five years? When will
we have to expect the re-recordable CD? Are there any mid-term
experience about tape-/head-wear-out? Are drop-outs really a problem?
Are they noticeably increasing during normal (???) tape usage?

And some rather profane questions: do you know where to get a DAT
cheapest? Which hifi-magazine should I consult (adverts)?
Some time ago someone posted a mail order company's address with
very low prices on DAT tapes (Maxell 120min. about 6$). Unfortunately
I deleted the article, so, if you have a pointer to another cheap
source...

I should mention that I am living in Germany but I intend to buy
the stuff in the US as electronics components are always totally
overpriced over here (even when the exchange rate DM-$ made things
more expensive for us).

Any help or comment of you is highly appreciated!
If you mail to me directly and if there's enough responses
I'd summarize to this newsgroup.

Regards, Guenter.

I wanted to mention that there is a DAT mailing list. Its for Grateful Dead
tapers, but only about 10% of the messages include the GD.
