[rec.audio.high-end] Imaging beyond the speakers

Steve_Graham@ub.cc.umich.edu (03/19/91)

In order to hear imaging beyond the speakers (IMHO) you must have either
speakers that were specifically designed to do that (dbx or Polk, for a cheap
and nasty example) or recordings that contain a certain amount of out-of-phase
energy. Recordings made with spaced mikes tend to have ambience that extends
beyond the speakers to some extent (whatever other imaging problems they may
have aside) whereas multi-miked/multi-tracked recordings, or those made with
some coincident mike pickup configurations will simply refuse to image beyond
(normal) speakers unless they have been subjected to special processing.
Perhaps Par Fornland just hasn't found the right recordings?
