Hi, I've just joined this list and thought I'd test the water a little bit by letting people know what equipment I've got (and want), and by throwing out a couple of spur of the moment questions ... So ... I've got a Denon 1500 MkII CD player, Cyrus One amp and Arcam Alpha speakers and am planning to get a new turntable very soon (anyone got any recommendations for around 500 pounds - I was thinking of a Systemdek IIX plus RB250 arm but haven't actually auditioned anything yet). Now, down to the questions ... last night I turned my amp off while the CD was still playing and nothing happened until after about 30 seconds when the music finaly, slowly, faded out. Do amps have BIG capacitors in them ?. More to the point, could doing this be harmful in any way 'cos I'd like to amaze and amuse my friends with it but not at the expense of any of my equipment. Next ... isolation platters (i.e. spiked platforms to put your turntables on). Correct me if I'm wrong but surely, spiking a platform to the top of your MFI homebuild hi-fi table will only result in the surface of this platform being, at best, as stable as the table itself (weakest link and all that). Oh, and finaly, while I'm on the subject of spikes ... anyone know of a good way of getting the spikes on speaker stands adjusted so that there is an exactly equal amount of pressure on each spike - i.e. so the speakers don't rock at all ?, it's not that I think this will make any difference in sound quality, it's just that I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to aesthetics and the thought that my speakers may be rocking slightly bugs me. OK, that'll do for now. Happy listening ... Alec
