[rec.audio.high-end] Cabasse Transmission Line With Janszens

sbradley@iwarp.intel.com (Seth Bradley) (06/25/91)

I currently am using Janszen Z-Plus electrostatic arrays in a home-brew
sat/sub setup with Eton 8" mid-basses and a Precision TA305F as mono sub.
The system is tri-amped. While overall I rather like the sound, there
are some areas in which it falls short, such as imaging, overall bass
quality, and midrange "smoothness". I feel I've taken the current setup
as far as it will go, and have decided it would be best to go to a 2way
with passive crossovers, retaining the Janszens, which I'm VERY happy with.
This means I need a driver/enclosure that will provide good solid low bass
extension yet is "fast" enough to blend well with the 'stats up to a crossover
of approx. 1.2KHz. I will probably use a steep slope. The best idea I've
come up with is to use a Cabasse 21NDC in a transmission line. This is
an inverted dome Kevlar/Nomex 8" driver, with a very massive frame and motor,
and a very long excursion suspension. This driver is very expensive ($160-175
each) and would like to hear people's opinions on this setup before taking
the plunge. A local speaker specialist would be building the boxes and
crossovers. Personal experience with the 21NDC or other Cabasse units would
be especially helpful. Thanks in advance!
