THIS IS THE NEW JOURNAL FOR OUR FIELD! Call for Papers for the new journal... PRESENCE Teleoperators and Virtual Environments First Issue, Summer 1991 Second Issue, Fall 1991 Editors-in-Chief =============== Teleoperators: Thomas B. Furness III Dept. of Industrial Engineering University of Washington and Human Interface Technology Lab Washington Technology Center Managing Editor ============== Nathaniel I. Durlach Sensory Communication Group Research Laboratory of Electronics MIT Dept. of Biomedical Engineering Boston University Associate Editors ================ William Bricken Univ. of Washington Blake Hannaford Univ. of Washington Xiao-Dong Pang MIT Warren Robinett Univ. of No. Carolina Robert B. Welch NASA Ames Res. Ctr. What should the material be about? ================================ In both teleoperator and virtual environment systems, the human operator is projected into a new interactive environment mediated by artificial electronic and electromechanical devices. The operator's performance, experience, and sense of presence in these new environments depends strongly on the human-machine interface and the associated environmental interactions. The primary focus of this journal is the understanding and design of these interactions and interfaces. Secondary foci include: (1) the human operator's own cognitive and sensorimotor systems, particularly those elements of these systems that are directly related to the human-machine interface or to the sense of presence; (2) the more peripheral components of the two types of systems, namely, the slave mechanism and its environment in the case of teleoperators and the computer and simulation software in the case of virtual environments; and (3) the impact of transformed presence, achieved by either teleoperators or virtual environments, in philosophy, culture, and aesthetics. The purpose of the journal is to disseminate information and to stimulate the creation and development of ideas, techniques, analyses, models, devices, and applications relevant to these foci. Who is expected to read and contribute to the Journal? ================================================= There are at least three major groups who are expected to contribute to and read the journal: mechanical and electrical engineers concerned primarily with teleoperators; computer scientists, high-tech artists, and media people concerned primarily with virtual reality; and psychologists concerned primarily with human-machine interfaces and with sensorimotor and cognitive behavior. What types of material are acceptable? ==================================== The journal will accept a wide range of materials in addition to formal articles, including letters, notes, reviews, graphics, announcements, and advertisements. The main criteria of acceptance will be relevance, originality, and quality, as judged by the reviewers and editors. Each submission should include five copies of the full manuscript. All elements of the manuscript must be double spaced. The format for references is as specified in the APA Publications Manual (American Psychological Association). All figures must be camera-ready and artwork must be 7" x 5" black- and-white prints. Color images should be submitted as transparencies or slides. There will be a page charge for color images. Where should contributions be sent? ================================= Nat Durlach, Managing Editor Presence Room 36-709, MIT 77 Massachusetts Avenue Cambridge, MA 02139 USA Tel: (617) 253-2534 Fax: (617) 258-7864 Email: durlach@cbgrle.mit.edu How often and when will the journal be published? ============================================= The journal will be published quarterly. The first issue is expected to appear during the summer of 1991. When are the deadlines for forthcoming issues? =========================================== The nominal deadline for submissions for the first issue was February 15, 1991, but submissions are being taken for this and the second issue now. Whom does one contact for information and subscriptions? ===================================================== MIT Press Journals Circulation Department 55 Hayward Street Cambridge, MA 02142 Tel: (617) 253-2889 Fax: (617) 258-6779 Annual subscriptions are $50 for individuals and $120 for institutions.
