[sci.virtual-worlds] Recommendations on labs to visit that are state of the art in VR

jack@uunet.UU.NET (Jack Suess) (05/30/91)

I am posting this for a friend who will be out of town for a few weeks,
please send responses back to my email address.

The Art department here at UMBC is developing a Center for Imaging and
Animation in Art. Presently, a number of the faculty are deeply involved
in computer imaging and animation using a variety of hardware and software
ranging from MAC's to PC's with Targa boards up to high end Silicon
Graphics boxes running Wavefront. One area of keen interest is looking
how Virtual Reality can be used by the artist. The hope is to be able to
create art that will interact with the viewer.

As part of the process of establishing the Center, the chair of the department
has received a large travel grant whereby he can visit other Centers to see
what they are doing in the field of Virtual Reality. The chair is interested
in recommendations for places he should contact about a visit. He is interested
in places performing interesting research in this field, he is not concerned
whether the research is aimed at the field of Art.

I would be very grateful if you would send recommendations for places to
visit, along with a sentence or two regarding the research they are doing.

Thank you in advance,
Jack Suess UMBC Academic Computing
