(TORONTO) Provincial Health Minister Elinor Caplan pitched in this morning at the official ground breaking ceremony for the first phase of the new Princess Margaret Hospital. When complete, the new facility at the corner of College and University will help ease the backlog of demand for cancer treatment. Miserable winter weather couldn't dampen the high spirits of hospital officials as the health minister tossed the first shovel of soil to mark the start of construction. As well as providing radiation therapy for an additional one thousand patients a year, Caplan says building the new facility close to other major hospitals will mean better cancer treatment and care. Phase One should be open early next year. The rest of the hospital to be completed by 1993.
