(MONTREAL) The minister of state Gerry Weiner and Quebec's
Education Minister Claude Ryan have unveiled the new Canada-Quebec
agreement on minority language education and second language
instruction.
The five-year agreement will cost 327-point-eight-Million-dollars.
It will see the improvement of school facilities and new exchange
programs. The program is aimed at compensating Quebec for expenses
relating to Anglophone services.
As part of the deal, an english community school will be built in
St Lazare, at a cost of four-Million-dollars. A
six-point-eight-Million-dollar expansion of Heritage College in Hull
will also be undertaken.
Weiner says the agreement will maintain a peaceful co-existence
between Anglophones and Francophones. The minister adds the deal will
support the English-speaking community of Quebec, and minority-language
communities throughout the country.
The two-governments will also provide training programs for
French-speaking teachers outside Quebec.
